World Economic Forum
The World Car Rental Economic Forum is a non-profit organization “committed to improving the state of the world.” The headquarters of the foundation are in Geneva and its most important meeting is in Davos, Switzerland. Business leaders, politicians, international political leaders, intellectuals and journalists are invited to the event to discuss the economic issues of the day. Other significant points on the agenda are the environment and health.
The forum was created in 1971 by the German Klaus Martin Schwab. At this time he was an established professor in the Geneva University. The forum was called European Management Symposium. Many European company executives during this event to talk about economic problems. Schwab is accredited for creating the stakeholder concept now present in every management textbook.
In the next couple of years the nature of the event changed. With the collapse of the Bretton-Woods system and the Arab-Israeli war much more political issues found their way into the agenda of the meeting. Politicians were invited for the first time.
During the following years politicians started using the forum as neutral grounds for their negotiations. The economic forum took much more global and political focus. The event became the place where issues were resolved for counties like Turkey, Greece, Israel, Palestine, South Africa etc.
The World Economic Forum also organizes the Annual Meeting of the New Champions in China, regional meetings in Europe and Central Asia, East Asia, Russia CEO Roundtable, Africa, the Middle East and in Latin America.
The forum is funded by its members – 1,000 companies. Those companies meet certain requirements: they must be international of scope and have more than 5 billion dollars in turnover. During the meeting in 2009 2,500 delegates were present. Most were business executives from the member companies, public figures (heads of state, ministers, senior officials in international organizations, ambassadors), from civil society, heads of non-governmental organizations, media leaders, academics, and religious and union leaders.
